This is often described as # being f/4.5, but the image-scale is given in several publications as 167"/mm, # which corresponds to 1235mm focal length = 48.6 inches on the nominal 10-inch # aperture objective. # The plates were taken with a 3-degree objective-prism providing a # dispersion of 1.2mm between H-gamma and H-epsilon, or about 310A/mm. Schalen # notes that both the G-band and the K line were in good focus. He used three # overlapping plates of about 100-minutes exposure all taken in August 1923. # Because there was no density calibration on the plates, Schalen estimated # types by eye rather than with the 'registrigram' scans he was used to. The # results appear to be successful nevertheless. He obtained types for 2104 BD # stars and a supplemental list of 299 stars, which includes some additional # overlooked BD stars plus a few HD stars without BD numbers. # # Identifying the stars # The BD stars are identified only by name, while the supplemental stars # have rough positions at 1' precision (but worse accuracy). To put the data in # useful form, I first obtained coordinates directly from the BD using VizieR, # for which a usage tip from Francois Ochsenbein was very helpful. I then ran # these back into VizieR to match these # against Tycho-2 or GSC-ACT. The northern # BD positions are relatively coarse, but include only brighter stars; the # southern BD stars have quite good positions, with rms scatter of 15"-20", # so IDs were usually unambiguous. # To guard against misidentification, I compared Schalen's types and # magnitudes extensively with other sources. SIMBAD was the first stop, # naturally. For fainter (mostly non-HD) stars, the Tycho-2 VT and BT-VT and # GSC magnitudes were a guide. In addition, several sources of photometry and # spectral types were consulted: # # o In the northernmost zones, part of the region is covered as Selected # Area 110 in the Bergedorf Spektral Durchmusterung. (As a consequence of this, # a complete file for SA 110 is coming soon.) # # o Between about -2.5 and -5.0 Dec, the eastern areas overlap with the # spectral survey done by Apriamashvili at Abastumani (1964AbaOB..31...27A), # which appears to be reliable and goes surprisingly faint. # # o In the Scutum starcloud, early-type stars could be sought or confirmed # using the survey by Roslund (1963ArA.....3...97R), which Gerard Jasniewicz # and I added to SIMBAD several years ago. # # o Most important in terms of numbers of stars was the survey from Crimea # by Irina Pronik (1958IzKry..20..208P). Her survey covers the western part of # Schalen's study in the busy area south of -10 Dec. Again this appears to be # reliable and served to confirm identifications and types for substantial # numbers of stars. # # o For stars north of -5.0 Dec, the TASS MkIII V,I photometry was useful # (2000PASP..112..397R, II/230). # # o For smaller numbers of stars in the southern areas, # two recent photometric # papers were useful: Lahulla & Hilton (1992A&AS...94..265L), and Forbes # (2000AJ....120.2594F). # # Schalen's supplemental stars were more problematic since only rough # coordinates were given. Short of taking new data, I've done the best I could # here by using the above resources; some stars remain lost however. I am # altogether less happy with these identifications. I might suggest that unless # a star has a reliable external identification it not be used in SIMBAD. # All the uncertain cases are again described in the notes. # # Photometry # The most obvious thing about Schalen's data is that the photo-blue # magnitudes have a strong color term. Roughly speaking they are close to _V_ # for blue stars, and progressively approach standard B for later types, but # match B only for M-type stars. There is also some variation across the field. # Since most of the stars have better data available, I decided to completely # replace his photometry. North of -5 Dec, I have adopted the TASS MkIII V # magnitudes rounded to 0.1-mag. precision, which is adequate for identification # and more accurate than Tycho-2 for the fainter stars. South of this I give # _truncated_ Tycho-2 VT for most stars. This makes a rough correction of the # VT values to standard V. Again these are rounded to 0.1-mag. precision. # A few of the faintest stars have GSC magnitudes (from short-exposure V-band # plates in this region), and there are some estimates or real photoelectric V # data drawn from SIMBAD. This is not a photometric catalogue in any case! # I show a large number of notes about individual stars at the end of the # file. Included here are remarks made by Schalen, # especially his correspondence # with Annie Cannon about difficult stars, which I copy in full. # # Spectral classification # One of the intriguing things about this data is # the Uppsala classification # scheme used for the early-type stars. This is based largely on the hydrogen # line-widths and the Balmer decrement, deriving from the HD criteria, and is # a morphological system consistent with the 'MK process'. Since the estimates # were done by eye rather than measured on spectral scans, the scale for the # early-types given here may differ somewhat from work done from the scans. # Normally, one doesn't think of low-dispersion plates allowing for much # discrimination for stars earlier than B8/A0. For a long time I have wondered # just how MK types correlated with the Uppsala Greek-letter system, which must # have influenced Bill Morgan's early thinking for the MK system. These stars # allow a good comparison via the two relevant volumes of Houk's HD revision. # For starters, the Houk and other comparison showed that the temperature types # match the HD system very closely, so there is no problem there. Later types # are called either 'g' or 'd' in favorable cases, so I have shown these as MK # luminosity classes III and V, respectively. When motion and/or color # contra-indicate, I have mentioned this in the notes. # The hot stars were more interesting. # Briefly, the later Swedish observers # (including Schalen) concluded that the luminosity types given the letters rho, # mu, and kappa were indistinguishable and correspond to dwarfs near A0. This # was confirmed in my comparison with Houk. I have thus given all these stars # the MK class V in the file along with the temperature type shown. The stars # between B5 and A0 with Greek-letter luminosity 'sigma' # or 'sigma-minus' grouped # fairly well among subgiants or giants according to Houk. I have given all # these MK luminosity IV here. The stars called 'A0 sigma' or 'A0 sigma-minus' # group around B9IV, consistent with the slight systematic shift between the HD # and MK systems here. I have _not_ changed any temperature types, however! # (I suspect Houk somewhat over-rates luminosity # among B stars---there seem to be # hardly any dwarfs, and an amazing number of bright-giants and supergiants.) # The B5-to-A0 stars ranked by Schalen as 'sigma-plus' are # slightly more luminous # on average, and I give these as MK class III. The late-B type 'tau' and # 'tau-minus' stars are another notch up, and I show these as Ib supergiants, # though some are obviously class Ia. The Schalen types scatter sufficiently # that this refinement seems unwarranted. I would actually prefer to show the # luminosity class as simply 'I', but this (valid) # MK luminosity type is verboten # in the SIMBAD headers. # A similar progression obtains for the early-B stars. Here the B0-B3 # stars assigned luminosity 'tau-minus' appear to # be slightly luminous, so I give # them MK class III in the file. The early-B stars given luminosity 'tau' by # Schalen are supergiants, and I give them MK class Ib here. The hottest stars # are not resolved for temperature by Schalen, and he writes them as either # 'B tau' or 'B tau-plus'. Comparison of this group with Houk and sources in # SIMBAD (Morgan, Hiltner et al.) show that these are _always_ classic OB stars, # ranking from B2V upwards in either temperature or # luminosity (or both). I show # these simply as type OB in my file. Finally, there is a substantial group of # stars called 'B tau-minus' by Schalen. The external comparison shows that # these stars cover the complete range of B stars in the MK system---about all # you can say is that "this is a B star". Since no temperature class is shown, # I just leave them as undifferentiated type B in my list. These last two # categories include all the early-B dwarfs, # which are otherwise unaccounted for. # This table gives a summary of the changes I have made to bring Schalen's # types into conformity with modern usage: # # # type Uppsala lum class MK class # B5 to A3 rho,mu,kappa V # B5 to A0 sigma,sigma-minus IV # B5 to A0 sigma-plus III # B5 to A0 tau,tau-minus Ib # B0,B2,B3 tau-minus III (one B3-sigma-plus star assigned III) # B0,B2,B3 tau Ib # B tau-minus B unspecified # B tau,tau-plus OB # # # I made the original comparison against about 120 HD and other stars. # In the process of compiling the final work, I matched every HD star with Houk, # and concluded that this transformation is about right. Perhaps notably, there # was no instance where Schalen gives a hot-luminous type for a star observed # by someone else that is in fact some mundane sort. There are some errors in # the other direction: some faint OB stars are shown as type F or G---a common # phenomenon even in modern spectral surveys (they are somewhat reddened to the # color of an F/G dwarf, and for faint stars the H&K lines are not visible to # indicate a later type on plates taken with refractive optics). Each error of # this sort is mentioned in the notes. If you don't like any of this, you can # always strip off the Roman-numeral classes and use only the temperature types. # All in all, Schalen was remarkably successful # in getting meaningful types # for early-type stars despite the low dispersion. And by implication, the file # contains substantial numbers of 'new' (70-year-old) luminous B and OB stars. # The complete list also provides large numbers of BD identifications for the # first time, and gives good spectral types for large numbers of stars already # in SIMBAD via astrometric or other catalogues (PPM, Tycho, LS, etc.). # # Additional comments # The comparison with Houk just mentioned revealed errors on both sides, # most often the luminosity class being off; sometimes Houk has the temperature # correct, while Schalen got the luminosity class correct. Both authors have # misidentified stars as well. # Schalen seems to have a made some misidentifications in the BD -08 zone # where spectral types near A0 have been assigned to late-type stars (even # IRAS/MSX sources). One or two could be strongly-reddened supergiants, but # more likely they are goofs in identification. I sought obvious ID errors # using the tools mentioned previously, but none were found (though such cases # did appear elsewhere in his list). All discrepant cases are described in the # notes. # For some neighboring pairs of BD stars Schalen gives a single spectral # type. Using color and proper-motion as diagnostics, I have assigned the type # to the relevant BD entry. # Every star ultimately was searched by position in SIMBAD, and I found # several problems with the literature in this field. A simple one is that the # photo-visual magnitudes given in the PPM Supplement are plain wrong, being # systematically too bright by about a whole magnitude. # The stars in open clusters are the usual mess in SIMBAD.
