I think that people probably won't search on this quantity;
most people who want to pick stars which are DEFINITELY real
detections will search (obs_count > N), where N = 10 or 15 or
something.
As long as we store the sum of the squares of the positions,
then we can re-construct the standard deviation as needed.
My vote for option #3 -- don't save it.
