Improving Operating Speed

Andrew and Chris have convinced me that there is a lot to be gained by 
writing a small amount of code in some better language.  This would allow 
Michael to use his old computer to run MICHAEL instead of buying a new one.

I think it is a small job.  A little bigger if .fts files are written.  It 
can be done transparently with the present code, just replacing 27 lines of 
Qbasic code with:

SHELL program, argument, argument...

OK, I used to get lots of messages saying "what can I do for tass"?  Here 
is something to do.  I bet there are 100 reading this that could do it in a 
couple of evenings.  Won't someone take on the project?  b(my capital b 
just died on my favorit keyboard)est would be someone who knows about .fts 
formats so that .fts files could be written directly.
