yes, though if there are any similar sounding databases, somebody else
double check.

The GCVS and NSV (and supplement) and Taichi Kato's newvar.cat are all
available as gzip now and in that form are 1 - 6MB downloads each. 
They're also fairly frequently updated and in need of redownloading
(every few months, or less).

Other catalogues tend to split into two groups, either a few meg or far
less gzipped (most are available for download in gzip form) or a CD's
worth, with little in the middle, so as you say, probably software only.
