  That was one of the ideas for using a master star list such
as UCAC which goes fainter than TASS (at least TOM1) and has
better astrometric accuracy and spatial resolution.  Then you
can look for those V&I paired observations that do not correspond
to known stars.  Of course, the more crowded the field, the more
likely that any asteroid will be blended with a real star or will
match some fainter underlying star.  Nothing is perfect!
  You might email Bruce Koen at Lowell and ask if they have a
piece of code that can do an automatic asteroid checking; such
things do exist.  What is going to be equally interesting is
the bursting objects; those such as GZ Cnc where you only have
one or two datapoints.
