Checking catalogues for variables, an important point reiterated

Don't use SIMBAD, get the source GCVS and NSV and NSV Supplement from :-

http://www.sai.msu.su/groups/cluster/gcvs/gcvs/

I've just been having a quick scan through a recently published list of
LPVs found by the EROS II experiment and their SIMBAD derived cross
identifications have totally missed the NSV inclusion of some of them.

And they'd gone to all the trouble of trying to check the objects they'd
found against known catalogues as well.

This is not the first time I've seen this happen. I've not had a chance
to check yet, but in these cases you usually find that objects (if any)
also in the last few GCVS Namelists have been missed as well, for
similar reasons.

I am not certain what the situation with respect to vizier is re this
sort of thing, as the CDS website seems to be down at the moment so I
can't check.

Cheers
