Changes to MkIV database access
Happy New Year all.
I've made a few changes and additions to the MkIV database access.
Added both short term (daily) and long-term Welch-Stetson variability
statistics to the database. Thanks to Doug Welch and Patrick Wils for
the Perl script.
I've added V & I sigmas and removed the min/max values from the Objects
page.
I have also made a first try at plotting the observations.
On the Objects page, when a query is made, there is now a Plot button
for each object which will open a Java applet in your browser that will
plot the observations for that object. You need to have Java enabled in
your browser and the Java plugin installed. I'd appreciate it if some of
you could try this out and let me know if you have any problems with
your particular OS/Browser/etc. configuration. I am not an expert on
applets. I've tested it on Linux/Mozilla 1.2 and on Win2k/IE5.5 and it
seems to work.
There are a few things I will try to fix (like inverting the plot so
lower(brighter) magnitudes are at the top).
If anyone's curious, the applet is a part of Ptplot:

Out of curiousity, are any of you familiar with Oasis?:
http://irsa.ipac.caltech.edu/applications/Oasis/
I ran across it a couple of months ago and it seems like it has a lot of
interesting features that might be useful to those using the database to
search for variables. I'm looking into using it to access the MarkIV
data, but I haven't gotten it to work. Yet.
If you haven't seen it, follow the instructions on the page above and
give it a try. It's pretty cool.
