Do a <dmesg>, and examine the output.  In the first line, you should see SMP
(mine is Linux version 2.4.21-0.13_test (root@thunder.mshome.net) (gcc version
3.2.2 (Man drake Linux 9.1 3.2.2-3mdk)) #35 SMP Wed Apr 9 07:29:10 MDT 200)

That shows the kernel is capable of handling a multi CPU machine.

A little below that, you should see something like:

1151MB HIGHMEM available.
896MB LOWMEM available.

Which shows my 2Gb of memory.

Later on, you should see something like:

CPU1: AMD Athlon(tm) Processor stepping 01
Total of 2 processors activated (8519.68 BogoMIPS).
