Rob,

Believe it or not, I just had a trouble like this at Fermilab where I have
a system set up to test CCDs for the DECam project.

There the servo motor was drawing enough current to overload the +5 volt
power supply.  In this case they had moved the electronics and had set the
current limit too low.  I just happened to notice that the overload light
was blinking.  The symptom was that the motor would not open the shutter
and then the software would die in funny ways.

So check on the +5 power supply.  It is probably sick.
