Re: Systems
Hi Tom,
I've been lurking on the list for some time, and have been thinking about
how I could assist the tass project. Unfortunately I don't have any experience
in the world of variable stars or imaging, so I am not able to help in that way.
However I have spent the last couple of years playing with Linux of various flavours, and have some experience in breaking and fixing such things as
printing and SAMBA/Windows sharing so I may be able to throw some ideas around that may assist.
Do you have a list of the current system configurations? and maybe a plan
for what you would like the system to look like as a "Perfect" system?

I have asked this question before and lost the
answers in one of many
crashes.
Many of you have asked how you can
help with tass. One way to help would
be to be an "answer man" for my
linux questions. I hate to post simple
questions to the list because
they are not of general interest. What I
would like to have is a list
of a few people where I could pick one and
ask a question.
Here is the
type of problem that I have. I now have 12 or so computers on
my network. I think every one has some sort of problem. The computer
I
want to put my printer on will not find it. The computer that finds
the
printer won't connect to the computer that has the files I want to print.
The computer that has the files won't write to floppys. So the
present
scheme is to copy the file to a third compute over the network, write
a
floppy there, and then move that to the computer with the
printer.
OK, from time to time, I want to work on such problems.
Mostly now I am
trying to run the telescopes, process the data, and work on
code to make
the data batter. So I don't often try to work on the system that does
what I want well enough to get the job done.
From
time to time I would like to work on such problems. For example
get
cups working so that I can print to one printer from any computer.
For
this I need extensive hand holding. If a few of you volunteer to be
hand
holders then I would not have to bother any one very much. Please,
not
the same workers, how about some new blood?
